2026-27 Player Movement guidelines

  • The following outlines the process for Edmonton Resident Players and families to request player movement within Community (Tiered) Hockey programs for the 2026-27 season.

This process applies to Community Hockey only and does not apply to AAA or AA (Elite Stream) programs.

    Eligibility

Player movement requests may be considered under the following circumstances:

    • The player’s Resident Minor Hockey Association (MHA) has a full team at the applicable age division (18 skaters and 2 goaltenders)
    • No team exists within the player’s age division in their Resident MHA
    • The request qualifies under Special Exception guidelines

    Special Exception Guidelines

Commonly accepted extenuating circumstances may include, but are not limited to:

    • Parent or guardian workplace location or player’s school location
    • Travel distance or access to ice times in exceptional circumstances
    • Alternate tier opportunity aligned with the player’s skill level
    • Demonstrated need for the player within the accepting MHA

    How to Apply

    1. Complete the Player Movement Form and submit it to your Resident MHA for approval.
      • The Signing Officer’s signature confirms approval

    2. Once approved, provide the signed form to the association you wish to register with for acceptance
      • The accepting association will upload the request through HCR

    3. Your Resident MHA will then approve or decline the request within HCR before it is reviewed by Hockey Edmonton

    If Your Resident MHA Declines

If your Resident MHA refuses to sign the form, they must provide a written explanation outlining the decision.

To request a review by Hockey Edmonton, submit the following:

    • Completed but unsigned Player Movement Form (must still include parent and accepting MHA signatures)
    • A detailed rationale from the player or family
    • Written refusal from the Resident MHA President or Signing Officer
    • Any relevant supporting correspondence

    Review Process

    • Applications will be reviewed regularly from June 1 to November 1
    • Applications submitted after November 1 will be considered by special request until January 1
    • If the requested MHA declines the request, the application will not proceed
    • Decision letters will be issued to the applicant and all relevant parties

  • Player Movement for the 2026-27 season is now closed.

In December 2025, Hockey Edmonton, in collaboration with the four Edmonton Athletic Clubs (Canadian Athletic Club, Knights of Columbus, Maple Leaf Athletic Club, and South Side Athletic Club), completed a review of the Hockey Edmonton Player Movement Process.

It was determined that the previous May 1–31 application window no longer supported Elite Stream athletes who wished to attend Spring Identification Camps.

To better align with the Elite Stream calendar, the Player Movement timeline has been updated.

    Important Dates

    March 1 – March 15, 2026
Edmonton Resident Players may apply to the Hockey Edmonton Elite Player Movement Committee for consideration to attend AAA or AA tryouts with a non-resident Athletic Club.

Late applications will not be accepted after March 15.

Decision letters will be issued prior to the opening of Spring Identification Camps in April.

    Eligibility

    This process applies only to:

    • Edmonton Resident Players
    • Players wishing to attend AAA or AA (Elite Stream) tryouts
    • Players requesting access to an Edmonton Athletic Club that is not their Resident Club

This process does not apply to Community/Tiered Hockey programs. Information regarding Community/Tiered Player Movement will be shared prior to the opening of 2026-27 registration.

    How to Apply

Eligible players must apply using the form here. The form will be open March 1 – March 15 only.
