History of the Award:
This award was first initiated by the EMHA Executive in the 1992-93 season with the first inductees being Henry Kaiser, Vern Davis, Russ Barnes and Harry Lewis. To recognize an individual volunteer of the EMHA or Member Organization for dedication and service rendered to the Edmonton Minor Hockey Association’s hockey program and as a sincere tribute to their outstanding contribution. 2024-25 Recipient: Wally Corse
Wally Corse's legacy as the driving force behind the North Edmonton Red Wings Junior B hockey team spans four decades, embodying the values of integrity, leadership, and community service.
Together with his father, Walter Corse, Wally initiated the creation of the team in 1984, providing young men in north Edmonton with the opportunity to continue playing competitive hockey into adulthood.
As the team's head coach since its inception, Wally's impact extends far beyond the hockey rink. Under his guidance, the team has achieved remarkable success, with multiple appearances at the Provincial Championship and a Silver medal in the Western Canada championship Keystone Cup in 2015. Yet, Wally's coaching philosophy goes beyond wins, and he prioritizes the development of character and life skills in his players.
Through the not-for-profit nature of the organization, Wally instills values of commitment, self-reliance, and organizational skills in his players by making fundraising a condition of participation. This approach not only strengthens the team's financial stability but also equips players with invaluable life lessons that extend far beyond their hockey careers.
Moreover, Wally's commitment to the holistic development of his players extends to providing employment opportunities at Truck-All Depot Ltd., where he serves as President and Senior Manager. For players not pursuing secondary education, these opportunities offer valuable work experience and mentorship, further enhancing their personal and professional growth.
As Wally enters his 40th year with the team, the countless lives he has impacted stand as a testament to his unwavering dedication and leadership. From shaping the lives of young men on the ice to earning the trust and respect of former players, Wally's influence reverberates throughout the North Edmonton community.
The EMHA Alumni is proud to present the EMHA Life Member Award (2024-25) to Wally Corse
